The pressure faced by
many young people today might be incomprehensible
to some while for others, it might be absolutely
unbearable.
This is exactly
how 15 year old Eulex Franklin of Lethem, Guyana
felt back in 2004.
Battling her own pressures
and torn apart with how to cope, she decided to attend
one of the Red Cross’ Together We Can session
which her friend had been raving about.
Today this self-assured
young woman confesses that she joined the Red Cross
to learn about peer pressure but has learnt so
much more that she simply had to become a peer
educator.
When asked what she
admires most about Red Cross, she replied, “The
togetherness of the team and the enthusiasm with
which work is done. I like also, that anyone
can always find someone to talk with and to rely
upon.”
Eulex is happy that she
made that ultimate decision that day. Learning how to cope with peer pressure,
building self confidence and being a part of the
Red Cross family has left her no room for regret.
In
fact, Eulex has realised her hidden ability to write
beautiful lyrics and poems about any subject matter. Living
in a culturally sensitive setting, Eulex wanted to
use her talent to educate the people in her community
about what she has learnt. Below is an extract
of the song:
People in this world are dying each day
Because of one little mistake
They go around living their lives ‘cause they
are not aware
Now it’s being a Red Cross Peer Educator
We promote three mains things, so listen carefully
to what I have to say:
Chorus:
Abstinence, Abstinence,
Be Faithful, Be Faithful,
Or use a condom carefully
Abstinence, Abstinence,
Be Faithful, Be Faithful,
Or use a condom carefully
Now it’s like 11
people are infected every minute
Some of which are our youths
Children are losing their mommies and daddies
And that is even sadder too
