My first experience with the Red Cross Movement
was in 1996 as a volunteer during the devastating
floods that affected a huge portion of the Orange
Walk District.
Since then, I have been greatly
interested in the Movement’s philosophy, principles and
humanitarian work.
After returning from my studies
abroad, I have been deeply immersed in our National
Society and have hold voluntary positions at the
branch and national levels. i.e. Vice Chairman – Belize
Red Cross Orange Walk Branch; Chairman – Belize
Red Cross Youth; and Youth Representative - National
Executive Committee. At 26 years old, I am the youngest
Secondary School Principal in Belize.
My first
reason for joining the local Red Cross was to be
a part of the “action” in
times of disaster. Little did I know that what I
once considered to be an adventure would constitute
my mission for life: to aid the most vulnerable and
protect the dignity of those in my community.
The
most rewarding experience, I must say, has been working
with the youths in my hometown in the planning and
execution of activities that lead to World Red Cross
Day in 2005.
Having youths take an active
roll in our branch and having them enthused with
the Red Cross principles and humanitarian values
is, and will continue to be, an inspiration to me.
Our “Walk A+
the Town” was well received and
appreciated by our youths who felt they were an
integral part of our movement by fundraising for
the Disaster Preparedness Program in our district.
My
hope for the future is that the majority of our youth
people adapt the seven fundamental principles and
humanitarian values of the Red Cross and Red Crescent
Movement, which through the ripple effect, would
be passed on to the greater community to “build
bridges”,
mend broken ones and propel world peace. |
