I joined the Red Cross Movement
in 1978 at the very young age of eight years as
a Junior Cadet under the guidance of instructor Mrs.
Sylvia Vargas.
In
1986, I moved up to Youth Member and in 1991, I attended
the 2nd International Youth Conference on Technical
Cooperation in Costa Rica in a Belizean contingency
of 21 members. Shortly after, in that year, I obtained
my first certification as a First Aid Instructor.
Since then,
I have completed 27 years as a member of this prestigious
family and, at 35 years of age, have undergone several courses and experiences
in all types of disasters. During Hurricane Keith I had the
honor of working as a logistician along with the International Federation's
delegates and assisted in the water and sanitation project in Douglas Village,
Orange Walk.
Presently,
I hold the positions of Vice-Chairperson of the Corozal
Branch Executive; Chairperson for the Corozal Branch
Disaster Response Sub-committee; and First Aid and
CPR Instructor.
I joined
the Red Cross because I was looking for something
to belong to and be a part of, but my view has expanded
through the years since I realized that one person
CAN make a difference.
It only takes one person to
keep a memory alive and though we may never be able
to correct all the wrongs in the world, we do have
the power to make it a better place.
My best
experience was one that occurred many years ago when
I treated a person for an open laceration that included an artery.
I had to
apply direct and indirect pressure while treating
him for shock and escorted him to the hospital. About
a year after the event I was approached by a stranger
saying that he knew me and said I was the person
who saved his life. He thanked me for it.
During
the time of the ordeal I was so busy dealing with
all the factors involved, and after the year, I surely
remembered the case, but not the face. However, his
recognition and gratitude gave me the final assurance
needed that I was in the right place and doing something
good in my life.
My hope
for the future is to be a part of a fully functional
Red Cross organization in this country which will be able to supply full time
service to the community and helping them to face each other with love and
dignity. |
