For the first time since the
DM Network was established, there was representation for
the Overseas Branches (OSB) in the person of Hemant Balgobin,
DM Officer, Cayman Islands Red Cross, at the DM Meeting which
was held in July. The following is his reflection on what
it felt like to be part of the DM Network. (The OSB only
has observer status on the DM network).
“Although we only attended this
meeting as an observer, the Network was very receptive and
thanked the Overseas Branches (OSB’s) for showing interest.
To
ensure the growth and development of the network, plans are
being made for full OSB representation.
The Network also
took into consideration our information and requests. This,
in my opinion, is a first but most important step in insuring
that we (OSB’s) are part of the decision-making
process.
One of the key points made that I agree
strongly with, was the fact that the Federation needs to
seek feedback from NS/OSB for tools, workshops or the general
necessity of things like some projects that, at times, have
little relevance to the Caribbean.
I also agreed with the
Network on the point that more responsibility needs to be
taken by NS/OSB in order to earn respect.

One
good example is to ensure we all contribute
to information sharing as requested.
Generally speaking, branches
are part of the Caribbean region and as such
need to be included in this and other arenas,
especially since OSBs operate a little different
than NSs.
We need to ensure that
the network, when making certain decision,
understands the difference and includes OSBs
in their plans.” |
