Caribbean Red Cross represented at
"Volunteers in Emergencies" workshop

The Caribbean Red Cross was recently represented at the “Volunteering in Emergencies: The Way Forward” workshop by Mrs Jondo Malafa-Obi, director of the Cayman Islands Red Cross. The workshop was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from April 17 – 19.

The objective of the workshop was to analyze challenges regarding volunteer management in emergencies and agree on solutions on how they could be implemented.

A total of 52 participants from various National Societies / Overseas Branches from the Asia/Pacific region attended the workshop.

Jondo presented the Caribbean Volunteer Management Tool Kit at the workshop and explained how it was being used in the region.

The Caribbean Volunteer Management Tool Kit was developed by the National Societies and Overseas Branches in the Caribbean and looks at the whole aspect of volunteer management in a very “user friendly” manner.

Participants at the workshop were quite impressed with the tool kit and requested copies to be taken back to their National Societies and Overseas Branches to use some of the techniques outlined in it to help them with management of their volunteers.

Throughout the workshop, the focus was the review of the volunteer management process as it relates to the disaster management cycle (before during and after a disaster).

The idea being that there would be a lower level of activity before an emergency, a scaling up of activities during the emergency operation, and then the scaling down after the emergency.

However, participants were urged to seize the “opportunity” of what any disaster may present i.e more volunteers, increase visibility and better recognition.

By the end of the workshop, participants were divided into 3 groups to carefully review 3 topics and give recommendations on what National Societies as well as the International Federation could do between now and 2010 to improve volunteer management.
