XVIII Inter-American Conference of
the Red Cross
Guayaquil, Ecuador – June 4-7, 2007
Caribbean Red Cross National Societies
are currently gearing up for the XVIII Inter-American
Conference which will be held from June 4-7, 2007 in
Quayaquil, Ecuador.
The 35 National Societies of the
Americas continent, together with sister National Societies,
the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC),
the Federation Secretariat and other partners, will
reaffirm their commitment to further strengthen the
work of the Red Cross with communities.
Under the motto “Safer and
Healthier Communities,” a particular emphasis
will be given to the thematic areas of the Global Agenda;
Community Risk Reduction; Community Health and the Promotion
of non-discrimination and respect to diversity in the
community.
The Conference will evaluate the
implementation of the Plan of Action, approved in the
previous conference held in Santiago de Chile and will
also approve the new Inter-American Plan for 2007-2011.
On the first day of the conference
an Inter-American meeting of Red Cross Youth and two
parallel seminars on “Mitigation and Vulnerability”
and “The Humanitarian Reform in Disaster Response”
will take place.
Mr Ian Courtenay, Caribbean representative
on the Youth Commission said understanding and appropriately
prioritizing issues that affect young people in the
region and proposing recommendations for consideration
in the debate and decision making will be the basis
for the next Inter-American Youth plan.

This
initiative, supported by CORI, the Secretariat
of the International Federation and the Youth
Commission will permit the active participation
of Red Cross youth representatives in the working
sessions of the Conference.
“These spaces will
provide an opportunity to share experiences
in an effort to promote greater regional integration
and achieve a standardization of National Societies’
projects and programmes. The objective of the
youth Red Cross is to agree on projects that
can be carried out by all National Societies,
such as Club 25 or Raid Cross,” said Mr
Courtenay.
The Inter-American Conference
is intended to be an opportunity to determine
where we are now and the path we should take
in the region for the next four years.
The Caribbean Cooperation
of the Red Cross (CCORC) executive will also
meet in Quayaquil following the IAC. This will
be the first time the newly elected executive
will meet following the 9th Biennial CCORC Meeting
which was held in the Dominican Republic in
February.
