Guyana Red Cross youth in Lethem develop computer skills

August 27, 2007

The Lethem Branch of the Guyana Red Cross (GRC) and Wings of Hope (WoH) have shown the power of true partnership as the two organisations merged their limited field resources to make the dream of 13 local Red Cross youth come true.

That dream? Learning how to use a personal computer.

WoH volunteer Jan Hudson of Luxembourg, under the guidance of WoH field director Terrence Trapnell and GRC field manager Julie Kanhai, conducted the intense micro computer training.

During his month long visit, Jan managed to successfully balance the training programme while assisting with the coordination of flood relief in the region.

Noel Prudencio, a beneficiary of the programme, said “This training was just what we needed to be up-to-date with the rest of the world.  Since the training, we’ve been able to use our new skills to produce a better looking monthly youth newsletter.

"We’ve also been able to relieve our local field manager of having to do most of the layout and printing tasks.  Now I can even log on to the Red Cross website and read this article!  Thanks Jan, Wings of Hope and Red Cross. Dreams do come true.”

Wings of Hope is an American based non-profit NGO that has been providing free medical air transport and services to the most vulnerable communities in 41 countries worldwide since 1962.

The organisation, in partnership with Remote Area Medical, is based in Region 9 and has been bringing the hope of life to vulnerable hinterland communities of Guyana since 2001.

To date, they have made over 1000 emergency medical flights in over 65 hinterland communities.
