Guyana Red Cross youth host "movie evening" for medical care organisation

Sit back, relax and enjoy the movie. And don’t forget to pass the popcorn!

The youth volunteers of Guyana Red Cross’ Lethem Branch held a fund raising Movie Gala Evening on July 7. Member Sulem Williams came up with the idea four days earlier. The evening was organised by volunteers and supporters, in particular Sulem and Ketlen Williams.

The venue was the Arapaima Primary School, thanks to Head teacher, Mr George. Pirates of the Caribbean 3 was the movie on show.

During the evening, members took the opportunity to distribute HIV and AIDS informational brochures and sold copies of their monthly newsletters.  On sale also were snacks donated by the youth themselves.

Proceeds from the fund raiser were donated to an organisation that has given unselfishly to the people of the hinterlands, Remote Area Medical/Wings of Hope (RAM/WoH).

RAM/WoH is the brainchild of Stan Brock who lived among the local Wapishana Indians in the Rupununi for 15 years.

The organisation has been providing vital medical care and air transport to thousands of Amerindians and hinterland residents free of cost since 1994.

In fact, each youth member was related to someone who had benefited from the services or assistance provided by RAM/WoH.

Local RAM/WoH Field Director, Mr Trapnell, said the fundraiser was a meaningful gesture and also historic as it was the first time any local fundraising event for RAMRAM/WoH has been done.
