Curaçao Red Cross youth organise special day for the elderly

April 5, 2007

More than 100 elderly men and women, living alone or in homes, were brought to the Curaçao Red Cross for a special day organized by the youth department.

Between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. the elderly enjoyed such activities as folklore dancing and traditional organ music, while being served traditional food by 30 Red Cross youth volunteers.

There was time for playing games especially the traditional “Bon Kune” with small prizes being won. There was also time for young and old to enjoy dancing together.

Funds for this day came from the budget for the Elderly project. The fund was started July 2006 with the financial support of the District Noord West Veluwe from the Netherlands Red Cross. Branches in the Netherlands support projects in sister branches in the Caribbean. This is a successful way for branches to get to know more about each other’s work.

Members of the media were present and the Red Cross received many compliments in the days that followed. Everyone agreed that this was a day never to be forgotten, and one to be repeated in the future.
