Bonaire Red Cross informs public about being prepared for hurricanes

October 5, 2007

Every Monday evening Bonaire Red Cross (Bon RC) volunteers go out into the community to inform people how to protect themselves before, during and after a hurricane.

Even though Felix passed close last month, many people still do not believe it possible for a hurricane to hit the Dutch island. As a result, very few people attend. However Bon RC volunteers together with members of the Fire Brigade continue this important task.

Volunteers also visited a primary school where they spoke to the children. The response was good since many were interested and asked questions.

Currently the disaster awareness 'Riskland' Game is currently being considered for use in future school visits. The ‘snakes and ladder’ type game was translated into Papiamento in 2005.
