The
group from San Fernando TML scored the highest number of points
but there was praise to all four groups in the final round
of the Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross’ Annual
First Aid Competition.
"The written part was the hardest",
10 year old students Nadia Ali and Sazarah Rahaman, agreed.
The questions about what day World Blood Donor Day is observed
(June 14) and which National Red Cross/Red Crescent Society was
recognized on 22nd of June 2006 (Palestine Red Crescent Society
and Magen David Adom) caused the children a bit of problems.
But
when all the scores were given, the two girls and the rest of
the group from San Fernando TML were announced as winners of
this year’s
Red Cross First Aid Competition.
Four groups reached the final and were
given an individual multiple choice test and two open questions.
They also had to perform two practical First Aid tests.
Group by group
the children showed how to safely remove soiled gloves and
how they would help a fainted person.
All the groups were outstanding,
the judges agreed, naming specifically the group from St. Margaret’s
Boys Anglican School.
“All the groups
did very well – so a special congratulations
to all for getting this far in the competition. Also I would like to give a
very special praise to the group from St. Margaret’s Boys Anglican School
who was outstanding in their practical test," said
Sister Patricia Paul, a retired nursing administrator who supervised
the competition alongside First Aid, Youth and Health personnel
from the Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross Society. "But overall it
was the group from San Fernando TML who scored the highest number of points.”
Nadia
Ali, Sazarah Rahaman, Ejaaz Ali, Kareem Mohammed and Siddeeq
A. Shatoor all traveled back to their school as winners
with top marks of 225 points.
2nd runner up was the group from
St. Margaret’s Boys Anglican School (187 points), 3rd
place went to Seereeram Memorial Vedic School (160 points)
and 4th final place, Arima Girls RC School (153 points).
San Fernando TML School will receive
their trophy next Red Cross Red Crescent
Day (May 8 2007) and all the children have been given Her Excellency’s
book prizes.
