Trinidad & Tobago Red Cross volunteers recognised

In conjunction with the World Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, the Trinidad & Tobago Red Cross Society (TTRCS) made an early celebration to honour 148 volunteers with awards of all different descriptions.

Gordon Irvin has five years under his belt as a volunteer with the TTRCS. That is worth celebrating.

He did, and he was joined by 147 other volunteers on Sunday May 7th. All were rewarded for their efforts in the service of humanity.

An awards ceremony marked a day of celebration for the TTRCS, which began with a church service at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in commemoration of Henry Dunant and the movement he founded.

“Anniversaries are special occasions. This year we would be honouring many of our volunteers and members who have over the years lived the true meaning of volunteerism.

"Your work and commitment have been phenomenal but we cannot stand on our laurels.  We must look inwardly to see what could have been handled better.

"We must ask whether we have truly lived up to and respected our Fundamental Principles,” said TTRCS president Delia Chatoor as she addressed volunteers, staff and other worshippers at the church.

“We are here today to thank you for your time and your talents,” said Chatoor.

Volunteers were given five, ten, 15 and 20-year awards. Gold, Silver and Merit awards, medals, plaques and life service awards saw everyone cheering, clapping and congratulating their colleagues as they each fastened the medal on their neighbour’s chest. More important awards were presented by Chatoor.

The traditional street parade took members in uniform to TTRCS headquarters and the afternoon’s festivities.

Young volunteers met on Tuesday May 9th to renew their pledge to the Red Cross principles and values at the annual Children's Chain Gathering. Hundreds of primary school children joining hands at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.
