New president to be elected at Jamaica Red Cross General Assembly

The Jamaica Red Cross will host its 21st Biennial General Assembly on Saturday October 28 at the Jamaica Conference Centre, Kingston, Jamaica. Over 150 volunteers and staff members of the Jamaica Red Cross as well as specially invited guests are expected to attend.

At the ceremony, which begins at 9:00 am, Her Excellency Mrs. Brenda LaGrange-Johnson, United States Ambassador will give the keynote address surrounding the theme “The Spirit of Volunteerism,” while representatives from the International Federation of Red Cross, the Spanish Embassy, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) will bring greetings.

The General Assembly is the highest authority of Red Cross in the island. It is at this forum that constitutional amendments are approved and the President and Vice Presidents as well as other members of the Executive and Central Committees are elected.

The Strategic Plan for the next five years will be presented as well as reports on the organization’s activities in the areas of disaster management, care, youth and communication & dissemination of humanitarian principles during the years 2004-2006.

The Assembly will award a number of individuals and organizations who have given support over the two year period.

The Jamaica Red Cross is a member of the International Federation of Red Cross which has over 183 member societies worldwide.

The Jamaica Red Cross through its network of dedicated volunteers aims to “improve the lives of the most vulnerable.”
