GRCS delivers First Aid and CPR training for Wai Wai Indians

4 September 2006

The Guyana Red Cross’ (Guyana Red Cross) Lethem Branch conducted a First Aid and CPR course for six Wai Wai Indians from August 14 – 18 at the very scenic eco-lodge located at the Iwokrama Rain Forest in Region 9.

The course was done for the Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation and Development, as part of its ranger training programme.

The course was facilitated by First Aid Instructor Mr Devaugn Lewis and Peace corps Volunteer, Ms Megan Campbell.

Other topics covered during the course included History of Red Cross and the Fundamental Principles. During the course, a reproductive health talk was offered to participants and all staff of the field station.

The first evening’s topic focused on male and female reproductive anatomy and physiology, physical and mental changes throughout our lifetime, lust and love, and defining sex.  The presentation was followed by “The Miracle of Life” video.

The second evening focused on promoting correct Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) information and safer sexual behaviour.

This was done by lectures on HIV/AIDS, STI and other sexual health concerns.  Participants were also treated to a locally produced video on STI. Three sexual health manuals were donated to the Iwokrama library by the Red Cross.

The participants were very willing and enthusiastic throughout the course.  It is the GRC – Lethem Branch’s hope to network with other organisations in similar outreach programmes to improve the lives of vulnerable people.
