Guyana Red Cross supports blood drive for Valentine's Day

16 February 2006

The Guyana Red Cross Society in collaboration with the National Blood Transfusion Service hosted a pre-Valentine’s Blood Drive on Monday 13th February 2006, at the GRCS HQ in Georgetown.

A total of 24 units of blood were collected through this drive, with 8 first time voluntary blood donors. Two couples also took this opportunity to donate their gift of life together.

The GRCS Secretary General also noted over 75% of the staff and volunteers at Red Cross HQ were also regular blood donors.

The Guyana Red Cross and NBTS began to host regular blood drives in the latter part of 2002, to promote healthy lifestyles and increase the number of regular voluntary blood donors in Guyana.

The pre-Valentine Blood Drive was the second drive of the year, and GRCS and NBTS have indicated that blood drives will be hosted on a monthly basis. More information on this is available at the GRCS HQ.

A number of youths from the recently launched Club 25 also donated blood, and continue to do so. Club 25 was launched in 2005 by the Guyana Red Cross Society, to encourage young persons to live healthier lifestyles and thus become regular voluntary blood donors.

Youths can keep an ear out for more information about Club 25 from the Guyana Red Cross.
