Grenada Red Cross First Aiders complete ITLS course

St. George’s University held a September 8 - 10 training course in International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) hosted by the New Jersey ITLS Chapter.

Grenada Red Cross Society (GRCS) was represented by three persons: Samantha Dickson, Health & Safety Director; Andy Roberts, First Aid Trainer – British Red Cross Bilateral First Aid Project otherwise known as the Caribbean First Aid Project; and Carrigon Coppin, First Aid Instructor.

The ITLS course is a 16 – hour intensive course for enhancing emergency response skills of EMT’s and First Responders. It involves extrication from vehicles, helmet removal, backboard stabilization and airway management among other skills with the aim to a speedy and stabilized removal of casualties from the scene to a medical facility.

The three GRCS representatives, after completing the provider level, went on to complete the theoretical aspect of the Instructor level and are awaiting certification following practice teaching to be held over the weekend of November 10th.

The three staff/volunteers look forward to passing on the skills acquired to strengthen the emergency response of GRCS.
