The
HIV/AIDS Department of the Grenada Red Cross (GRCS) organized
a Fun Day for its recently-trained peer educators (PE’s)
involved in the Together We Can (TWC) peer education programme.
The
objective of the event was to allow peer educators to share
information amongst themselves in a social environment.
Originally scheduled for September 30, inclement
weather conditions forced a postponement for two consecutive
Saturdays. Conditions were the same on Saturday October 21, so
the event was relocated to the GRCS grounds.
Because of the weather, there was a smaller
turnout of peer educators than expected. The ones
who did, however, had a ball!
We began at 11 that morning, with
an introduction of persons and an icebreaker. At 11:30, a cricket
match between two teams, one named “Team Abstinence” and
the other “Team Condomize”.
Team Abstinence promoted the need
to abstain from all sexual and drug-use activities, and Team
Condomize promoted the “safer
sex” concept. Abstinence won the cricket match.
After the game, the peer educators
had lunch, which was prepared by educators and instructor trainers
(IT’s).
In the evening,
we played pictionary and an energetic game of ‘search and
find’. Dominoes and cards were available for the less energetic
peer educators.
The day ended with a discussion on
the upcoming phase of the Ride the BUS Campaign, “teach back” sessions for
peer educators, and a mini-refresher course using the TWC manual.
The PE’s and IT’s both requested another fun
day activity and are looking forward to participating in upcoming
events. |
