Dominica Red Cross launches 'Faces' Campaign

11 May 2006

World Red Cross Day, May 8, provided the ideal platform for the launch of the ‘Faces’ Campaign in Dominica. The launch took place at the national headquarters of the Dominica Red Cross at 4.30 p.m.

Information on this campaign was widely disseminated to the public due to the media interviews given by the Director General, Mrs Kathleen Pinard-Byrne, on the occasion of World Red Cross Red Crescent Day.

With little funding committed to the campaign, sponsorship of the mural painting was provided by a local company, Garraway Enterprises Limited, and a few banners provided through the 'Together We Can' programme.

Preceding the unveiling of the mural, a short ceremony took place in the headquarters conference room for a gathering of approximately 30 invited persons. Television, radio and print media were in attendance for this occasion.

Mrs Pinard-Byrne gave an overview of the Together We Can programme, to which this ‘Faces’ campaign added a new dimension.  Guest speaker was the National AIDS Programme (NAP) Coordinator, Mrs Julie Frampton, who congratulated the Red Cross on having seen fit to take the fight against HIV/AIDS a step further and commended them for their active collaboration in the activities of the National AIDS Committee.

Following a 30-minute interview with Mrs Pinard-Byrne at the main radio station, a pharmaceutical outlet called in to request posters for display in their main and branch locations.

Mrs Frampton has requested the placement of one of the banners on a billboard outside the main Princess Margaret Hospital.  Discussions with the NAP are on-going for the collaborative production of banners locally, which will prove more cost effective for both institutions.
