In
recognition of the UN’s International Day of Older Persons on October 1, the
Curaçao Red Cross youth arm organised a special day in
their elderly persons project, which began in August this year.
The 15 elderly persons in the project
were picked up from their homes and first brought to the Red
Cross headquarters. They were then transported to an elderly
home ´Kas ansanio uni´,
where they joined other elderly persons for a breakfast organised
by the home. There were some 500 persons present, including elderly
from the neighbourhood.
Several government officials visited that
morning, including Prime Minister Ms. Emily de Jongh-Elhage,
Finance Minister Ms. Ersilia de Lanooy, and the Deputy for Health
Ms. Gimena van de Gen.
Project coordinator Hugo Rafaela and 30 Red Cross youth were
present to assist in serving the elderly.
After the breakfast, the 15 elderly
persons were taken by the Red Cross on an island tour, especially
to locations where great changes had taken place. The elderly
couldn’t believe their
eyes to see the latest development on their “dushi Kòrsou” (sweet
Curaçao).
On their return to the elderly home, a typical Sunday meal was
served and a folkloristic show put on.
For many, it was a day not to be forgotten as some had not left
their homes for months. They all expressed happiness for this
day specially organized for them.
Thanks to the project participation of the Netherlands Red Cross
through which the Noord West Veluwe district and the Amstelveen
chapter gave financial support.
Beside continuing their weekly visits,
Curaçao Red Cross
youth hope to take the elderly on monthly outings, as well as
clean their homes, conduct small repairs, and assist with basic
shopping.
