Bermuda Red Cross delivers Ideals in Action Training

8 May 2006

The three Ideals in Action courses hosted during the first quarter of this year have proven very popular at the Bermuda Red Cross with a total of 28 staff, volunteers and members having participated.

The course material educates on the history of the Movement, its component parts and how it functions; the Fundamental Principles; the uses and ownership of the Red Cross and Red Crescent emblems.

With some of the participating volunteers/members having been with the organization since its inception, there is a vast range of experience and knowledge of not only the Bermuda Red Cross and the Movement in general, but also of International Humanitarian Law, the Geneva Conventions and their connection with the Movement.

This has led to lively debates and great interest.  While there was some negative feedback (mainly relating to the length of the course and the relevance of some topics to the Bermuda situation), this has been far outweighed by the interest in the course.

“I learned a lot about the Red Cross and Red Crescent from this course…things I had assumed were either disproved or enhanced.  I am glad that the class was offered.”

By year’s end it is anticipated that all of the Bermuda Red Cross staff, volunteers and members will have been exposed to this important course, and it will then form a part of the induction programme for new members.
