More
than 100 people – from
students and professionals to those skilled in a trade – became
volunteers of the Belize Red Cross (BRC) after visiting the Society’s
booth at this year’s Belize Tourism Board and Chamber of
Commerce Expo Fair.
The event was held at the St John’s College grounds on
September 17 and 18, three days before Belize’s Independence
Day on September 21.
BRC staff and volunteers swiftly brought together all they could
find in the office for exhibition, promotion, dissemination and
recruitment.
The booth radiated the good work of
the BRC with an assortment of First Aid banners, posters of
the recently launched HIV/AIDS “Faces” campaign,
The Seven Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross
and Red Crescent Movement, the Provention Project, disaster plans,
and a map of Belize with the locations of branches.
There was
also room to display tee shirts for the HIV/AIDS peer-to-peer
education programme known as Together We Can (TWC), and the Caribbean
First Aid Project.
Volunteer Detachment #6 came out in
full force offering free blood pressure checks. First Aid kits
were sold. Two attractive baskets were donated by the First
Aid & TWC teams, consisting
of a family-size first aid kit, and an assortment of promotional
items.
Interaction with visitors was excellent.
Questions about BRC were posed and answered, with small prizes
given as rewards.
Visitors
included Miss Belize World Felicita Arzu and Miss Belize Universe
Maria Jeffery. Both were presented with small tokens
and recruited as volunteers.
The true spirit of volunteerism
flared brightly that weekend.
