HIV/AIDS, First Aid messages in Belize Red Cross Carnival float

19 September 2006

The Belize Red Cross - with the Together We Can, HIV/AIDS and Caribbean First Aid Project teams joining forces - participated in this year’s Carnival Road March on September 9.

The Society had an attractive float combining messages from both HIV/AIDS and First Aid, “Together, We Can ‘Cut Out Stigma and Discrimination’ in Belize and everyone can “Be Someone…learn First Aid”Coincidentally, World First Aid Day was celebrated that day.

The float displayed a 9 feet x 8 feet structure of a large scissors and bold letters forming the phrase “Cut it Out....Stigma and Discrimination” in red, gold, silver and purple glitters.

Red Cross Movement flags were hung on the front sides of the float as well as a big, colorful banner, depicting the First Aid message. Banners from the Faces campaign were also used.

All participating staff and volunteers wore tee shirts to increase awareness of both messages and to advertise the other project-related activities like, TWC’s ‘Real Deal’ radio talk show, the ‘Faces’ campaign and our Caribbean First Aid program.

Promotional items such as pencils, key rings, leaflets, brochures and candy with HIV/AIDS and First Aid messages were enthusiastically received by the public.

The turnout for the Carnival was very good. High temperatures and pulsating rhythms made the day a fun-filled one for all.
