The
DIPECHO V project in the Bahamas has taken on a new dimension
with the addition of a partner.
The Ginn Company, a large US-based resort and golf course design
and management company that recently committed itself to a long-term
development in the West End community on Grand Bahama, has joined
the project.
John Davies, Ginn Company CEO, said at a September 15 DIPECHO
V Community Awareness meeting, that his company will join to
help strengthen ties with the West End community through the
project.
His announcement at the meeting venue, the
St. Mary Magdalene Anglican Church parish hall in Grand Bahama,
was greeted with great enthusiasm by all the evening's participants.
Present for the meeting were Diane
Turnquest, Bahamas Red Cross DIPECHO V project coordinator
and New Providence Community Centre emergency manager; Luke
Bethel of NEMA and Trevor Basden of the Bahamas Met Office.
Also present were members of the West End community, local councils,
religious leaders, Urban Renewal, the local Red Cross and Government
representatives from Freeport and neighbouring communities.
The DIPECHO V project overview was presented at the meeting.
The emphasis was on the skills and knowledge that each of the
presenting partner agencies have to share with members of the
West End community, to help increase their ability to make decisions
about strategies and actions that affect their lives.
A Red Cross focal point was also assigned at the meeting, and
dates for Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment, and Community
Disaster and Response Team training were confirmed.
