Communities learn about HIV in Guyana 'TWC' concert

14 July 2005

Thirty 'Together We Can' Peer Educators and Instructor Trainers at the Guyana Red Cross Lethem Branch office organised and hosted an HIV concert on the evening of Friday 1 st July.

The aim of the concert was to sensitise the Lethem and St. Ignatius communities of the facts about HIV, and the decisions and pressures youths today face. The concert also emphasised the importance of abstinence and faithfulness.

The youths acted out skits to show the different situations that may arise. Some of the peer educators got to show their talent by singing songs about HIV and abstinence that they composed themselves. Skits were performed to reinforce the correct and consistent use of condoms if persons choose not to abstain.

In between performances, the hosts reiterate facts about HIV in Guyana for the audience.

The event was a success, with a large turnout from the communities. Vincent Henry, Chairman for Region 9, asking the peer educators to perform some of the items in the programme during Amerindian Heritage Week in September.

Proceeds from this concert will go towards a clean-up campaign, and the provision of strategically-placed litter bins in the community.
