Belize Red Cross closes appeal for Tsunami victims

12 April 2005

The Belize Red Cross has closed its Asian Tsunami Appeal. Donations collected since January 3rd have been sent to the Federation's Offices in Geneva. The first disbursement of BZ$49,317.00 was transferred on February 11th, and the balance of BZ$24,200.00 on the April 12th, 2004. This brings the total raised by the appeal to $73,517.00.

This money will be used by the Federation over the next five years for a range of long-term recovery and disaster preparedness programmes. These include rebuilding homes and social centers, reconstructing and upgrading hospitals and clinics, replacing water and sanitation systems, livelihood support for local farmers, fishermen and other artisans, psychosocial support as well as additional training in first-aid and disaster response.

Belize's solidarity with the rest of the world has done much to help the victims recover both physically and emotionally. It will take years to get back on their feet, but knowing that the world cares and that they are not alone gives hope and restores faith.

The Belize Red Cross deeply appreciates the generous contributions received from the Council of Churches, NICH, schools, the business community and the general public. A complete listing of donations is available upon request at the National Headquarters on Gabourel Lane, Belize City.
