Four members of the Belize Red Cross leave Belize today, Tuesday,
November 8th for Seoul, South Korea.
The delegation is traveling in order to attend the General Assembly
of the International Federation of
Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) that will be held
from the 10-18 November.
The General Assembly meets every two years in order to deliberate
and make decisions affecting Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies
spread all over the globe.
There are currently 182 member societies of the International
Federation and it is anticipated that
more societies will be admitted at this year meeting.
Included on the agenda of this year’s General Assembly
are the following:
(1) Decisions on the acceptance of an additional Federation
symbol.
(2) Elections of a new Federation president and other members
of the governing board.
The delegation to Korea comprises of Belize Red Cross President,
Ms. Karen Diaz, Director General, Mrs. Lily Bowman and Ms. Farah
Marshand, a youth member of the Orange Walk Branch.
Joining the Belize delegation will be Mr. Ian Courtenay, a member
of the IFRC Youth Commission who
will also serve as an election observer during the voting process
at the General Assembly.
Expenses for participation in this year’s General Assembly
were met the International Federation of Red
Cross and Red Crescent Societies, The Spanish Red Cross and fund-raising
by members of the Belize Red
Cross.
