12 August 2005

The Belize Red Cross Society, in collaboration with Pacific Institute for Women's Health (PIWH), hosted a three day regional conference for Caribbean youth in sexual and reproductive rights from August 9 - 11 at the Biltmore Plaza in Belize City.

The objective of this initiative was to promote a dynamic environment of youth empowerment by incorporating elements of reflection, construction, and collaboration on local, national, and regional initiatives and proposals for the promotion and defense of sexual and reproductive rights.

The conference included young participants, ages 16 to 25 years, from Trinidad & Tobago , Barbados , St. Lucia and Belize with responsibilities for, or affiliated with a youth organization.

At the end of the conference, organizers hoped participants would have developed a plan advocating for change to implement upon returning to their respective organizations.

Other organizations involved were The Belize Family Life Association (BFLA), Young Women Christian Association, (YMCA), Youth Enhancement Services (YES), and Gojoven Project.

Official opening ceremonies for the conference were held on Monday, August 8th. Special guests were the CARICOM Youth Ambassadors.
