The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has donated US$ 200,000 to the Jamaica Red Cross relief operation as contribution to the appeal launched to assist 15,000 persons left homeless and/or vulnerable after the impact of Hurricane Ivan.

The contribution of US$200,000 is part of the Inter-American Development Bank's effort to provide emergency financing to assist up to five Caribbean states that suffered extensive damage from Hurricane Ivan and Frances.

The goals of the IDB include social equity, sustainable development and growth in developing countries. The Bank's portfolio in Jamaica includes projects in a range of areas including private sector development; social sector development; public sector modernization; environmental management; and infrastructure development in the agriculture, transport, energy and telecommunications sectors.

Jamaica Red Cross volunteers manned over 100 shelters opened across the island and have since distributed blankets, tarpaulins, food, hygiene and kitchen kits to approximately 8000 people. Assessment teams from the Red Cross have been mobilized to some of the most affected areas and the National Society's psychosocial support team has been deployed to assist both affected persons and Red Cross volunteers.

"This gracious contribution will indeed go a far way in helping us to assist those most affected by Hurricane Ivan," commented Yvonne Clarke, Director General of the Jamaica Red Cross. "We are grateful to IDB and commend the organization on its commitment to humanitarian activities and development."
