Summer Camp for Belmopan Branch of Belize Red Cross

8 September 2004

The Belmopan Branch of the Belize Red Cross held a Summer Youth Camp July 29th to August 2 nd , 2004. Eighteen youth from the Belmopan Branch of the Belize Red Cross participated and were supervised by the Branch Youth Coordinator, Ms. Kimberly Stuart, the Branch Chairperson, Mrs Sarita Westby and a senior member of the Branch Youth Group, Ms. Celia Cho.

The camp was held at the Belize Defence Force Camp in the Cayo District called Belizario Camp. The soldiers were supportive and one was on duty to help with supervision and assistance with training throughout the camp period.

The youth were taught to swim in the camp pool, filled specifically for their use, and water safety was included in the Fist Aid and CPR classes.

Other fun activities included songs and story-telling around a camp fire, basketball and volleyball games, a treasure hunt and a hike to a Mennonite Community through a beautiful countryside.

Two young persons were voted best campers for their participation, friendliness, helpfulness and reliability.

The Branch fundraised to finance the camp themselves. Generous donors included: The Belize Social Security Board, The Protected Areas Conservation Trust, the Ministry of Education and local businesses and individuals

The camp was so successful that it will be used as the basis for planning a national youth camp next year.

At present 15 youth from the Branch are attending a three day training session for Peer Educators as part of the "Together We Can" Programme that is now rapidly developing in the country.

During the CPR lessons, the youths got an opportunity to demonstrate the skills learnt. These are just the first few lessons before the youths can be tested for certification.
