Anguilla Red Cross receives relief supplies from BRCS

4 October 2004

The Anguilla Red Cross recently offloaded a 40ft container of disaster relief supplies which were donated by the British Red Cross Society (BRCS).

The supplies are being housed in the Old Prison Building which was renovated and donated to the Red Cross for this purpose by the Ministry of Social Development in Cooperation with the Chief Minister's Office.

According to President of the Anguilla Red Cross, Ms. Doreen James the group is happy to have the supplies which are there in case there is a disaster. She stated that at such time there will be something for the vulnerable on island.

Past President and Red Cross member Mr. Elvette Hughes said in the past the Red Cross had to depend on supplies coming in after a disaster. "This takes a lot of time but now we have materials in stock in the event of a disaster," he said.

Mr. Hughes added that there is a second container on its way. He said the organization is grateful to the Ministry of Social Development for allowing the use of the Old Prison facility and for preparing it for them to store the materials.

Hughes stated that the Anguilla Red Cross looked forward to the support of the public so it can continue to serve Anguilla in the event that they are affected by a disaster.

The supplies include two water tanks, clean up supplies, hygiene kits, blankets, 130 tarpaulins and a generator.
