Suriname Red Cross celebrates 70th anniversary
On Sunday, June 20th, the Suriname Red Cross (SRC) celebrates its 70th anniversary. SRC was established during the war time as a branch of the Netherlands Red Cross. The colonial government established a Red Cross Society in Suriname, for the purpose of promoting humanitarian rights in times of war. In 1940, the year of the SRC establishment, there were four branches set up in districts: Moengo, Commewijne, Coronie and Nickerie. Two years after, a fifth branch was founded in the District Suriname. Services were delivered specially to war victims, such as Blood Transfusion services and literature distribution.
