  • The Barbados Red Cross Society Responds to Barbadians’ Humanitarian Needs

    The Barbados Red Cross Society (BRCS) has launched “Operation Breadfruit” the key component of its response to the humanitarian needs of Barbadians affected by the damage done by Tropical Storm Tomas.

  • Barbados Hosts Regional Pre-Hurricane meeting

    The Barbados Red Cross Society played host to the annual Red Cross Pre-Hurricane Meeting, which brought together about 60 top Red Cross officials, donors and other agencies involved in regional disaster risk reduction projects.

    The three day meeting, coordinated by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Caribbean Regional representation Office was held at the Accra Beach Hotel and Spa on the island’s South Coast.

Barbados, which is the easternmost Caribbean island, is one of the most densely populated countries in the Caribbean.

Barbados is 267 square kilometres in area, quite flat with the highest hills in the east of the island. The country's climate is tropical, with a rainy season that lasts from June to October. It has been fortunate to escape the ravages of hurricanes that have affected other territories.

Barbados is an independent sovereign state within the British Commonwealth with a parliamentary democracy. Queen Elizabeth II is the head of state and Prime Minister Freundel Stuart is the head of the government elected into power during the last general elections held on January 15th 2008. The capital is Bridgetown and the country is divided into 11 parishes.
