International Volunteer Day - 5 December 2004
"It  is  fair  to  say  today that volunteering  is  a  means  of social participation and will play a crucial role  in our future. Today volunteer action is already a key element in the building of civil society and relations within the international community"
Juan Manuel Suárez del Toro,
President, International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies

National Societies recruit volunteers to carry out tasks that directly or indirectly help vulnerable people. Each National Society has different volunteer programmes, and requires different skills to make these programmes effective.

To become a volunteer with the Red Cross/Red Crescent, you need to contact the nearest branch of the National Society in your country for details of the programmes that they run and their current needs for volunteers.

There are around 97 million members and volunteers in the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement worldwide, of whom an estimated 20 million people are volunteers
