Anti-discrimination messages flourished in downtown Kingston
on World Red Cross Day, as Red Cross Youths joined in the international
fight against stigma and discrimination.
Inspired by the Federation’s stamps campaign, the young
adults of the newly restarted youth group in Kingston and St.
Andrew Branch of Jamaica Red Cross invaded downtown Kingston
on World Red Cross Day with messages like “Do not discriminated
because of age”, and “We are stronger if we stand
together”. Posters were hung in the area around Ward
Theatre, fliers put in shop windows and on buses in the parade
area.
Central in the intervention was
a painted backdrop; with the heading “You can’t get HIV by…” In
front of this display, various scenes were acted out by the
youths, who also involved those passing by in the skits. Hugging,
drinking from the same cup, playing and dancing were among
the activities shown by the youths, who also handed out information
about the work of Jamaica Red Cross and talked about safer
sex.
