World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day 2004 - May 8
Cayman Islands Red Cross Day Celebrations

The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent is preparing to celebrate their work around the world during Red Cross Week, starting on May 3rd and continuing through to May 8th. During this week the Cayman Islands Red Cross is hoping to raise public awareness and funds for the organization.

The first Red Cross Week collection was in 1918 when a flag day was organized to commemorate Red Cross Founder Henri Dunant's birthday on May 8th. Since then, Red Cross Week has developed to become firmly rooted in the Red Cross Calendar.

Cayman Islands Red Cross volunteers and staff will all work together to raise money and educate the public about the fundamental principles of the Red Cross. Below are some of the activities that will take place during the week:

• "Ideals in Action" - Three evening courses by a guest speaker from Montserrat. The speaker will talk about the Fundamental Principles and the worldwide work of the Red Cross.

• The Cayman Islands Red Cross will visit schools and educate them on the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement.

• They will also be introducing the 'Masters of Disasters' - This is a program about disaster preparedness to be taught at schools.

• Selling Red Cross Pins

• Joining the Batabano parade and have a bake sale at the Batabano food stalls.
